Repost: Modifying the Envelope die to hold Gift Cards

I posted this about a year and a half ago... instructions on how to modify our darling Stampin' Up! Scalloped Envelope Die (cut out with the Big Shot) to hold a GIFT CARD... 

With the holidays upon us, we are all looking for cute ways to give a gift card, so I thought you might like to view this post again.  enjoy!

step 1: start with a 6x6 piece of DSP

 

step 2: fold it in 1/2

 

step 3: align the folded edge with the 3rd scallop down on the die

 

 

step 4: run it through the BIg Shot machine

step 5: open up the envelope and burnish out the fold/crease with the Bone Folder

 

step 6: seal the edges shut with Sticky Strip and you have an envelope sized to fit a Gift Card!

Oval Frame - Petal's a Plenty embossing folder

I have seen several stampers cutting their Stampin' Up! embossing folders to create other patterns and designs.. so I thought WHY NOT CUT OUT THE OVAL shape so I don't have to use the wood frame (see THIS POST).

IT WORKED!

I used my Stampin' Up! Hobby Blade to cut the oval.

How great that the folders are so affordable that I can create several different shapes if I want to!  :) You can use the Oval Scallop die as a cutting guide.

Do you know how to get this lovely blank oval area using the Stampin' Up! Textured Impressions Embossing Folders???

Normally when you use one of the Impressions Folders you get an all over textured impression like this:

But I got a cool swap at Convention from Betty Kincannon who learned this technique from this blog here and here.  I wanted to try this with our Stampin' Up! Impressions folders, and I knew you'd want to see a tutorial, so I modified the instructions to use my Stampin' Up! products and I eliminated a few of her steps to suit my needs.... HERE YOU GO...

Then you get THIS!!

Supplies:

I used these frames from a national craft store chain.

UPDATE.... so I'm thinking this morning.... Why not make my own template/frame?!? I think we could use our Stampin' Up! Chipboard sheets, and any Big Shot die, and cut an opening in a rectangular piece of chipboard and make our own frame... need to give it a try when I get home this afternoon!!  Let me know if you try it!

Tutorial: Envelope Die - resized to fit a Gift Card

One of the things I taught my downline at our Luv 2 Stamp group meeting on Saturday was how to alter ourScalloped Envelope Die to make it BIGGER to fit a credit card - they loved learning this and making one!

 

step 1: start with a 6x6 piece of DSP

 

step 2: fold it in 1/2

 

step 3: align the folded edge with the 3rd scallop down on the die

 

 

step 4: run it through the BIg Shot machine

step 5: open up the envelope and burnish out the fold/crease with the Bone Folder

Top Note Die Tip with Window Plastic template - VIDEO

This was one of the 5 proejcts we made in my Bright Delights Rub On class last week:

 

I used the Stampin' Up! Thick Window Sheet plastic (#114324, pg 10 of the Occasions Mini) and the Top Note Die to make a template for sponging the edge of the Top Note Die cut. I made a video to show how I did the Kiwi Kiss sponging around the top edge of the Top Note Die.. you can view the video here:

I learned a GREAT tip from demonstrator Lisa Freeman for cutting your 12x12 cardstock/DSP to use in the new Matchbox Die from Stampin' Up! (in the Occasions Mini Catalog).  Thank You Lisa!  She said it was ok if I made a video showing this tip... so here you go!

Fun Folds Class - part 3

Continuing on with the samples from my Fun Folds class this week.. here is the 3rd one.  This was totally inspired by the AWESOME Beate Johns.. I adore her work, and based this card on one of her recent creations. 

 

This card is a folded Top Note Die from Stampin' Up! (see below for details). It is cut out of Riding Hood Red cardstock and stamped with the Baroque background stamp in the same ink.  The focal point is Bella Blossoms, also stamped in Riding Hood Red ink.

 

The greeting is stamped in Chocolate Chip ink and punched out with the large oval punch and layered on the Designer Label punch (Riding Hood Red c/s sponged with Chocolate Chip ink).

The ribbons are: White and Chocolate taffet ribbon wrapped around the card together and tied together in a knot.

To make the folded Top Note Die, you can cut your cardstock to 4-1/4"x8-1/2", fold it in 1/2 (so you have a 4-1/4" square), then place it on the Top Note die with the fold HERE:

Line up the FOLD of your c/s as shown above and then run it through the Big Shot Machine.  This will give you a folded Top Note... this is very similar to the folded Scallop cards HERE.

Folded Cards with the Scallop Big Shot die

 I made a couple of fun cards using the Scallop Circle Die and the Big Shot machine from Stampin' Up!

It's difficult to see in a photo WHERE the scallop is, so for demonstrations purposes only, I'm setting an orange scallop on this die, just so you can see where the scallop cuts.

 

 

 

 

      

 To make this Bib Card, you'll need to fold your cardstock in 1/2 (my piece started at 5"x11" - then I folded  it in 1/2)

Then I placed the folded cardstock on the die like this and ran it through the Big Shot machine:

 

Remember, the orange scallop is only there so you can see where the die actually  cuts.. you don't put a scallop on your die when cutting the folded cardstock.

Then once your cardstock is punched out, use the Wide Oval Punch to punch out the "scoop" of the neck in the folded side of the cardstock.

Punch 2 holes with the Crop A Dile and set 2 jumbo eyelets in the holes.  Run ribbon through the holes to look like the strings on a bib.

I used the same wide oval punch to punch out the baby stamp from the Punches Three hostess set.  Ink and c/s: Baja Breeze.

I used a paper piercer to put a hole in each scallop.

     

The card folds at the top and opens at the bottom.

To make a scalloped card with a folded top like the one above, place your FOLDED cardstock like this on your scallop die, then run it through the Big Shot machine.

 Supplies:  Baja Breeze C/S, Season of Friendship set, Felt Flurry Snowflakes, Chit Chat Rub-ons, Riding Hood Red Taffeta ribbon, Rhinestone brads, Chocolate Chip and Whisper White ink.

 

Stampin' Up! Big Shot Die tip

Here is a quick tip for you - something that has come in handy for me...  I decided to write the minimum cardstock size required on the edge of my Stampin' Up! Big Shot dies.  This way I won't have to measure them each time that I want to cut out that shape.

Christmas Card Class - I Wish Simply Scrappin' Kit & a Video!

Today is my "I Wish Christmas Card Class" - we are using the the I Wish Simply Scrappin' Kit from Stampin' Up! to get a jump start on making our Christmas cards !!

My son has been experimenting with Windows MovieMaker, and he shot a tutorial video for me and then did the editing .. go easy on us. it's our first one... it shows how to make the Pennant Die cards above .. hope you find it helpful!

 

If any of you have kids who play RuneScape, they'll enjoy the music video my son made and posted on YouTube HERE.  I was impressed that he knew how to do all this.. and now he's teaching me how!

   

Premium Crease Pad - Big Shot tutorial

I was die cutting 18 little envelopes for my upcoming workshop on Saturday (hi Stacey!), and I noticed that I was not getting a real great score mark all the way around on the little Scallop Envelope Bigz die from Stampin' Up!.  Luckily, last night there was some discussion on a yahoo list and 2 demonstrators helped me to figure out how to use the PREMIUM CREASE PAD to get better score marks on this die. (Thanks, Nancy and Kerry!).

This applies to ALL OF THE DIES WITH SCORE lines, such as the envelope die, the pillow box, the 5-point star, petal card and 3-d circle ornaments.

I thought a step by step photo tutorial might be helpful to those of you who have not used the Premium Crease Pad.. so ... here it goes..

Side Note: for the Scallop Envelope Bigz Die, I thought I'd let you know that I'm using Maine Blueberry DSP from Stampin' Up!, cut to 5"x5-1/2".

STEP 1: place BOTH of the opaque plastic shim pieces from the Premium Crease pad package on top of the clear Standard Cutting Pad.

STEP 2: Place the Scallop Envelope Bigz die - foam side up - on top of the white plastic shim pieces (being careful to get it exactly centered over the plastic pieces).

STEP 3: place your cardstock or DSP on the die.. I like to place the part you want as the "outside' of the envleope FACE DOWN (notice in the finished sample, these squares will end up in the inside of the env.)

STEP 4: Place the Premium Crease Pad on top of the paper or cardstock.

This becomes your "sandwich". (If you are hungry, I'd suggest Kinders or Quizno's though) :)

STEP 5: Roll your "sandwich" through the Big Shot.

STEP 6: As you take the "sandwich" out of the Big Shot, and take the Crease Pad off, you'll see the die has cut the envelope shape perfectly and made the 4 crease/score lines!

STEP 7: When you flip it over you'll see how nicely those score marks show up!

Step 8: Fold up the envelope and add it to a card or gift and enjoy!

Whew.. hope that was helpful.. I sure needed it! :)
